That’s the number of times AI was mentioned during Google I/O 2024.

This can only mean one thing - Google is back doing Google things.

At its annual I/O developer conference, Google showcased its latest advancements in AI, highlighting its ambitions to integrate AI across its vast product ecosystem.

It’s safe to say that they went all out.

Here’s a quick recap of all the big releases:

AI Overviews in Google Search: AI-generated summaries will appear at the top of search results, providing concise answers to complex queries.
Project Astra: a multimodal AI assistant that can interpret visual and audio inputs in real-time, identify objects, locate misplaced items, and explain code (in other words, their response to GPT-4o 👀 ).
Gemini 1.5 Pro and Gemini Flash: Gemini 1.5 Pro and Flash, improved for tasks like translation, coding, and reasoning, are now available in preview globally and will launch in June. They support a 1 million token context window and multimodal inputs.
Gemini Live: A feature that enables voice-based AI interactions with Google's AI assistant.
Veo: A text-to-video generator that allows users to create AI-generated videos from text prompts.
AlphaFold 3: An AI model capable of modeling molecular structures of DNA, RNA, and proteins, designed to aid in drug discovery.
Gemini Nano in Chrome: Google's lightweight LLM, Nano, will be integrated into the Chrome browser, enabling on-device AI features like text generation.
AI Teammate: An AI agent in Google Workspace who can use company data to answer questions about meetings, emails, and work-related information.
Circle to Search: An update to the Circle to Search feature on Android, allowing users to get AI-generated instructions for solving math and physics problems, powered by Google’s new LearnLM model.
AI Content Watermarking: An expanded system for embedding invisible watermarks in generative AI text and video outputs to identify their AI-generated nature.

Plus: During the demo, there was a subtle yet significant easter egg - a new prototype of their AI glasses, codenamed Project Iris 👀

🎧️ Camerabuds

According to a recent report from The Information, Meta is exploring the possibility of launching AI-assisted earphones with built-in cameras.

Codenamed "Camerabuds," the product is still in the early design phase, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has yet to approve any of the proposed designs.

What is it? The concept involves equipping earphones, either in-ear earbuds or over-ear headphones, with cameras that allow AI to view the user's surroundings. The AI could then leverage this visual data to translate foreign languages, identify objects, and provide other augmented reality capabilities.

However, the project faces significant technical hurdles:

Fitting cameras, batteries, and processors into the compact form factor of earphones will be a challenge.
There are also concerns about bulky designs, heat dissipation, and potential hair obstructions.
Privacy issues related to the outward-facing cameras are also a consideration.

Overall: Meta previously explored launching earphones in 2019 but abandoned those plans, deterred by the saturated market. However, with rumors that competitors are also working on AI wearables, the company seems motivated to pursue this latest effort, though no concrete timeline has been set.

🤖 U.S. and China hold first bilateral talks on AI risks

In a big development, the United States and China met in Geneva on Tuesday for their first formal bilateral talks focused on addressing the potential risks posed by advanced AI technologies.

The meeting came after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed the topic during Blinken's recent visit to Beijing, where they agreed to hold these dedicated talks.

Here’s why this is important:

While the U.S. and China are vying for AI supremacy, they have yet to establish mutually agreed-upon guidelines for the safe and responsible use of these rapidly advancing technologies. This inaugural dialogue aims to initiate conversations on bridging that gap.
Senior officials from the White House and the U.S. State Department will lead the American delegation, while China will be represented by officials from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Development and Reform Commission.
The talks are expected to primarily revolve around the technical risks posed by advanced AI systems, with both sides sharing their respective domestic efforts to address such risks.
However, the discussions are not intended to result in any joint statement, technical collaboration, or renegotiation of existing U.S. technology protection policies.

Overall: As AI continues evolving at a breakneck pace, the safety standards adopted by influential powers like the U.S. and China will likely shape global norms and regulations.
