🪪 Licensing kick
Like Thanos with his Infinity Stones, OpenAI is on a mission to collect as many licenses as possible, only this time with major publishers.
Here’s the TL;DR:
The Atlantic and Vox Media have recently inked separate licensing and product deals with OpenAI. This deal allows them to license the publishers' archived and current content to train their AI models and inform their chatbots, such as ChatGPT.
In return, OpenAI will provide attribution and links to the publishers' content when referenced in user queries.
The deals also enable the publishers to leverage OpenAI's technology to develop new AI-driven journalism products and features.
But this isn’t just a one-way relationship:
The Atlantic will gain access to OpenAI's technology through its experimental effort, Atlantic Labs, to create AI-powered products and experiences.
The publisher will also provide feedback to OpenAI on how AI can improve news delivery.
Vox Media plans to use OpenAI's technology internally, such as enhancing its first-party data platform, Forte, for advertising optimization and audience targeting.
Externally, Vox will use OpenAI's tech to improve content discovery and recommendations across its websites.
Overall: These deals give OpenAI access to credible content sources, potentially protecting it from future copyright liability.
For the publishers, it's an opportunity to monetize their content, experiment with AI-driven products, and shape how news is presented in AI-powered platforms.

🧑💻 Codestral
Mistral AI just launched Codestral, their first-ever code model designed explicitly for code generation tasks.
What is it? Codestral is a powerful 22B open-weight GenAI model that can assist developers in writing and interacting with code across 80+ programming languages, including Python, Java, C++, JavaScript, and more.
Here’s the TL;DR:
Codestral boasts impressive performance and a large context window of 32k tokens, outperforming other code generation models on benchmarks like RepoBench, HumanEval, MBPP, CruxEval, and Spider.
Its Fill-in-the-Middle capability also surpasses DeepSeek Coder 33B on Python, JavaScript, and Java tasks.
Developers can access Codestral through various channels:
Download and test it from HuggingFace under the Mistral AI Non-Production License.
Use the dedicated codestral.mistral.ai endpoint (free for 8 weeks).
Build applications on La Plateforme using the api.mistral.ai endpoint.
Plus, Mistral AI has also partnered with LlamaIndex and LangChain to enable building agentic applications with Codestral. This initiative aims to empower developers, democratize coding, and push the boundaries of code generation performance.

👀 More OpenAI drama?
In a tell-all interview for The Ted AI Show, Helen Toner discussed what “really happened” at OpenAI and how the company's board of directors was caught off guard by the release of ChatGPT in 2022.
What happened?
Toner revealed that the board "was not informed in advance" about the highly anticipated chatbot's launch and learned about it on Twitter, just like the general public.
Toner then accused OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, of "withholding information" and "misrepresenting" what was happening at the company, making it difficult for the board to fulfill its oversight responsibilities. (She cited the ChatGPT release as an example of Altman's lack of transparency with the board.)
This adds quite a bit of context to the Sam Altman drama from last year:
ICYMI, OpenAI went through a tumultuous period after Altman was briefly ousted as CEO by the board, which cited concerns about his candor in communications.
However, OpenAI reinstated Altman less than a week later, following internal pressure from employees threatening to resign and external pressure from Microsoft, a major investor.
Toner resigned from OpenAI's board shortly after Altman's reinstatement.
Overall: In response to Toner's comments, OpenAI's current board chairman, Bret Taylor, expressed disappointment that she continues to revisit these issues.
Taylor stated that an independent review found Altman's initial firing was not due to concerns about product safety, development pace, finances, or misrepresentations to stakeholders.
