🇺🇸 White House wants customer information

Big news alert: An upcoming White House executive order may require cloud computing giants like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon to divulge customer information to the U.S. government.
Specifically, they would need to report when customers purchase computing resources above a certain threshold, analogous to "know-your-customer" policies in banking to combat illegal activities.
The reason? To establish a system for early identification of potential AI threats, especially those emanating from foreign entities.
However, there are some concerns:
Critics warn it could resemble a surveillance program if not meticulously implemented.
Assessing computing usage would require cloud firms to scrutinize their customers, potentially creating conflicts of interest.
There's concern that this policy focuses solely on LLMs and neglects other AI tools like facial recognition algorithms, which require less compute but can be equally harmful.
Overall: In the larger context, this move aligns with the initiatives of companies OpenAI and the RAND Corporation, which advocate for "know-your-customer" mechanisms as a means to curb malicious AI utilization.
But the White House executive order may need a bit more nuance if wants to successfully regulate AI from a holistic point of view.

🪬 Bill Gurley rips into AI regulation

VC Bill Gurley took the stage at the All-In Summit in LA last week and ignited AI Twitter with one statement:
"Regulation is the friend of the incumbent!"
In a presentation titled "2,851 Miles" (referring to the distance between Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.), Gurley delved into the perilous realm of "regulatory capture.”
His argument? Promising innovations have often collided with the interests of industry incumbents partnered with powerful lobbyists.
Gurley cited Tropos Networks, a company that provided free citywide Wi-Fi and was embraced by mayors but faced fierce opposition from corporate giants like Verizon and Comcast, who championed regulations to protect their interests.
Gurley spotlighted similar concerns in the AI space about regulatory capture, referencing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's call for AI regulation and the ongoing debate surrounding open-source AI models like ChatGPT and GPT-4.
Gurley also emphasized the importance of preserving innovation to safeguard prosperity, especially given the rise in popularity of open-source models.
Overall: He closed with a call for "massive transparency" in government, stressing the need for greater visibility into political funding.
His talk underscored the critical intersection of innovation, regulation, and the future of technology, sparking essential conversations about finding the right equilibrium between openness and control in the AI domain.
