🏫 NYC Public Schools Lift ChatGPT Ban

Back in January, the NYC Public School system placed a ban on ChatGPT, stating "negative impacts on student learning, and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of the content."
But in this op-ed, David Banks, the head of NY Public Schools, stated that he’s reversing the ban on ChatGPT and admitted that banning the bot was a "knee-jerk fear."
Banks promised to support educators and students as they learn about the technology, and the school system will provide AI resources to help with discussions and lessons surrounding the subject.
NYC's decision to embrace AI in the classroom comes after several other school districts, including Baltimore County Public Schools and the Los Angeles Unified School District, also placed restrictions on ChatGPT earlier this year.

😓 Neeva’s search engine falls

The search game is a tough one, considering the heavy hitters that rule the space. (cc. Google, and a resurrected Bing)
Neeva found this out the hard way.
The search engine that was touted to take down Google is officially shutting down on June 2nd due to “difficulty attracting new users” and the “challenging economic environment.”
The company tried rapid global expansion as well as a generative AI engine that combined multiple sources to create a single answer but was still unable to get the needed growth.
Going forward, Neeva is looking to pivot into the AI space. Seeing the need to use LLMs effectively, inexpensively, safely, and responsibly, they hope to use their expertise with small models, size reduction, latency reduction, and inexpensive deployment to help enterprises looking to develop their own LLMs.

🙅 Apple says no to ChatGPT
Huh… this is weird.
Despite Sam Altman’s global tour addressing data privacy concerns, as well as the addition of features that turn off ChatGPT history, Apple has warned its employees to avoid using ChatGPT due to fears that it could possibly leak confidential company information.
Why the warning: Apple purchased two AI startups in 2020 for $220 million and $50 million, respectively, and has been developing its own large language model.
All of this points to one thing - Apple is getting ready to make some big AI announcements.
And a data privacy breach like the one at Samsung could prove costly for them.
Good on Apple for taking the necessary precautions.

Sorry Bing, Samsung’s sticking with Google as its default mobile search engine [The Verge] - Samsung has decided to continue using Google as the default search engine on its mobile web browser. While Samsung was considering a switch to Bing, the company has since paused the internal review due to concerns about how it could affect its relationship with Google and the market’s perception of the move. However, Samsung has not permanently closed the door on using Bing as its default search engine in the future, according to The Wall Street Journal. (Read more)
G7 Summit Leaders Call for Stricter AI 'Guardrails [Gizmodo] - Leaders from the G7 summit in Hiroshima discussed the need for "guardrails" to be put in place to monitor the development and use of AI. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that they would lead the movement toward better AI regulations. (Read more)
