In April, Elon Musk threw some shade at Microsoft, stating they had “a very strong say, if not directly control, OpenAI at this point.”
But Satya Nadella was not about to let that slide.
The Microsoft CEO disputed Musk's claim, stating that it was “factually not correct” and that OpenAI was extremely grounded in its mission of being controlled by a non-profit board.
He further mentioned that small players can still compete against large companies like Microsoft and Google in AI, citing the competition in the search market as an example.
Look - at the end of the day, actions speak louder than words. So whether or not MS controls OpenAI will only be revealed over time.
P.S. “Satya” in Sanskrit means “the Truth”... so we have to believe him, right?

💊 Google's AI improves drug discovery
It takes 10 to 15 years and ~ US$1 billion to develop one successful drug.
Despite all this time and money, 90% of drug candidates in clinical trials fail.
To help combat these long odds and expensive trials, Google Cloud has launched two new suites of AI to enhance drug discovery and precision medicine.
The Target and Lead Identification Suite is designed to hasten drug discovery and lower expenses by assisting scientists in recognizing biological targets for treatment development. Pfizer and Cereval are among its early adopters.
The Multiomics Suite aims to expedite genomic data analysis to identify the best treatments for individual diseases and aid researchers in accessing the appropriate data, helping create personalized, effective treatments. Colossal Biosciences has already noted significant benefits from using the Multiomics tool.
While AI doctors personify ethical ambiguity, AI drug research might be what it takes to make drug discoveries time and cost-efficient.

🛢️ AI digs for oil

Why did the CIA send me an email asking, “Do you have any?” the moment I typed that word? Weird.
Anyway - like drug trials, oil explorations are often subject to trial and error, costing companies time and money.
To solve this issue, Shell has partnered with big-data analytics firm SparkCognition to use AI in its deep-sea oil exploration and production.
SparkCognition's AI algorithms will process and analyze large amounts of seismic data to help search for new oil reservoirs. It will generate subsurface images through seismic data scans, helping with deep sea preservation.
They estimate SparkCognition’s algo can reduce exploration time from 9 months to 9 days. That is ideal, given the goal is to improve efficiency, speed, and success % in exploration while also cutting costs.

ChatGPT Scams Are Infiltrating Apple’s App Store and Google Play [Wired] - Scam apps claiming to offer access to OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot service through free trials are infiltrating Apple's App Store and Google Play Store. The apps eventually start charging subscription fees and hook victims into paying a regular weekly or monthly fee, a practice known as fleeceware. (Read more)
